Yesterday, I posted a piece as part of my search to discover the name of Griffith residents. I had no idea it would be such a contentious issue. And, despite the ruling of our mayor, John Dal Broi, that our name should be ‘Griffithite’, many have challenged the decision.

So far, our poll has received the following responses:
Some of our readers have suggested other names such as ‘Griffindor’, which I am quite partial to.
And, members of The Area News team are divided on the issue.
However, former editor of The Area News and Griffith veteran, Daniel Johns - who refuses to accept any name other than ‘Griffithian’ – commented on what has been dubbed, ‘Griffin-Gate’:
“While Griffithian is clearly the correct term, it’s ultimately a matter of personal choice,” Mr Johns said.

“A bigger concern should be that some people can’t even pronounce their home town correctly,” the Griffo continued.
“It’s not ‘Grithiff’ or ‘Griffiff’.”
“Pronouncing the ‘ff’ and ‘th’ in quick succession can be a tongue-twister for toddlers, but most born-and-bred Griffithian grown-ups should be able to pronounce it correctly.”
“If such linguistic laziness continues, we could end up being branded Griffiffians.”
Coming from a man who has had a strong presence in Griffith for over 10 years – it’s hard to disagree with him.
