I’m not quite yet ready to call myself a local, or a townie, but during my transition period from ‘Sydneysider’ to someone who lives in Griffith, I’ve been curious about the new identity I am to assume.

So, I ask this, ‘What do you call someone from Griffith?’
This very question has been wracking my brain and keeping me up at night, so I started with research.
When I walked the streets of Griffith with this question, I received a plethora of responses. One particularly struck a chord with me.
“Why don’t you write real news?”
Others gave me a little more to work with like Ebony Kimball from Sanity in Central Plaza, who commented that “Griffinarian” was the correct title for Griffith locals.
“We’re too divided to agree,” one such local Grifter said.
“I’m from Griffith,” another Griffo said.
The Mayor of Griffith, John Dal Broi, had a long think on the question of what name Griffith residents should go by.
“We’re a multicultural community,” Cr. Dal Broi started.
And, when I went through some of the names the locals had come up with – Griffians, Griffos, G-Town Gangsters just for starters – our mayor laughed.
But, he finally came to the answer – the name we could very well wear with pride:
“Griffithite.”
However, former editor of The Area News and Griffith veteran, Daniel Johns - who refuses to accept any name other than ‘Griffithian’ – commented on what has been dubbed, ‘Griffin-Gate’:
“While Griffithian is clearly the correct term, it’s ultimately a matter of personal choice,” Mr Johns said.
“A bigger concern should be that some people can’t even pronounce their home town correctly,” the Griffo continued.
“It’s not ‘Grithiff’ or ‘Griffiff’.”
These arguments leave me sitting on the fence.
The Area News needs to know – what should we call Griffith locals?
