A special Harmony Day event on March 23 wants to change all that. Griffith community groups have come together to host a private pool party for women who might not otherwise be able to swim in public.
Albility Links’ Olivia Maier-Gee says through her work it became apparent many women didn’t have the opportunity to swim.
“We’re doing a different take on harmony day. We’re focusing on women who don’t usually have the opportunity to swim, whether that be for cultural reasons, privacy or even being embarrassed,” she said.
“We’ve been kindly loaned the use of the Post School Options pool so the ladies can experience the water.”
Munawar Sultana Baryamai has been involved with Sprinkles Multicultural Playgroup since her 11-year-old daughter was six months old. She says she really wants to get the word out into the community.
“I got lots of experience with other mothers and people of different cultures. I want more women to be interested in these activities. Griffith is very nice and people are very open. People are open,” she said.
“I want to see more women come along.”

Ms Maier-Gee hopes the party could kick start similar events in the community.
“The hope is, that if there’s enough interest we could look at doing something like this again in the future,” she said.
”Griffith is very multicultural. It’s about people not living in silos and getting exposure to others in a friendly, open way.”
Childcare is available for mothers on the day and the event itself costs nothing.
The Harmony Day pool party will take place on Friday March 23 at 10am at Griffith Post School Options. Free transport will depart from Griffith Public School on Coolah Street at 9:30am.
