The MIA charities had hoped to benefit from the installation of two reverse vending machine in town – put in place as part of the NSW Government’s return and earn scheme.
The scheme enables you to get cash back for used glass bottles, cartons, containers and cans; or donate it to charity.
The problem is, if you choose to donate, you’re only given the option of statewide charities: Cancer Council, St Vincent de Paul, Surf Life Saving NSW and Planet Ark.
So Carevan and GCC are urging people to simply drop off their eligible recycling to their building – at 80 Benerembah St, if they want to instead keep their contributions local.
GCC staff will then take the recycling to the reverse vending machines, and use the cash to do their important charity work.
The machines are located in the car park behind supermarket Foodworks, and outside Griffith North Woolworths.
The NSW Government’s Return and Earn Scheme has faced numerous problems since its roll out in December last year.
While the government looked after Sydney, where they set up nearly 200 collection points by December 1, the government forgot about Griffith and other regional areas.
Griffith got its first machine in January.
