A Griffith man has been sentenced for failing to stop for a police pursuit and driving whilst disqualified.
Anthony Mitchell pleaded not guilty to all charges, but was convicted following a hearing at Griffith Local Court on Tuesday.
He was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment with a non-parole period of eight months.
The court heard police had spotted his car while in the area for an unrelated incident. They observed the Toyota Hilux turn from Elbert street to Collier street with an unrestrained load of sand.
Police say they recognised the driver and knew his licence was disqualified.
Upon signalling for the driver to over for a licence check, the vehicle turned right, continuing at a slow speed down the road.
The driver was then observed negotiating aright hand bend by cutting corners and not keeping left of the unbroken dividing lines. Police say they also observed him turning left at a give way sign, failing to indicate.
Police continued to follow Mr Mitchell as he slowed on Altin Street before accelerating west, reaching 67 kilometres per hour in a 50 kilometre zone.
At the intersection of Blumer and Mackay Ave, he turned east.
Here, he was clocked reaching 86 kilometres per hour in a 60 kilometre zone.
Turning left onto Macedone road, the driver failed to stop at a level crossing.
As there was another car stopped at the line, police decided to terminate the pursuit.
Mr Mitchell was later arrested on September 20 after he was observed riding his bike along Banna Ave.
