For Janet, the love of the sport developed at a young age. 

“I played it when I was in year 10 at school. Virtually, just started from there. I wasn’t a basketball player or into netball,” she said.

“It’s a game I’ve come to enjoy and love.” 

Janet began playing with Griffith in 1995 before permanently making the move the following year. 

“I’ve been involved with the same girls since then and bringing juniors through,” she said.

She has been involved with coaching and umpiring as well. 

In her final year, Janet collected the Ann Paul Memorial Shield after her side’s trip to Parkes for the Half State Masters Hockey Championships.

Prior to her time playing in Griffith, Janet was involved with hockey in Leeton for over two decades.

“When I was in Leeton, I ran junior hockey. I’ve coached a lot of kids over the years.”

“Some of those kids are still playing these days and that’s great to see.” 

Her favourite part of the sport, Janet says, is the community atmosphere.

“It’s probably more of a team sport. You still be more of an individual, but it’s all part of playing with other people and being part of a team.” 

Even though her career spanned over 50 years, it was difficult for her to pick a single highlight. 

“I play hockey for the love of it, it’s never been for the accolades or the attention.”

For the last few years, hockey has been something she bonded over with her grandkids.

”All those games I’ve played for the last six years with my grandchildren around have been great,” she said.

“It’s a bit funny when I look back on it. You’re running around hearing people call out your name and all of a sudden you hear someone yelling for Nan.” 

They’ve grown from kids who’ve just decided to pick up a stick to being quite confident and competent hockey players.”
