The bedroom should be a haven for sleep, but only one in four Australians had eight hours sleep per night, according to the Sealy Sleep Census.
Colour can play a big role in influencing peoples emotions.
The bedroom should be styled with colours that reflect a relaxing atmosphere.
The Block 2016 winners Will Bethune and Karlie Cicero have shared their tips. They say one of the first factors to consider is a basic colour palette.
Think about your bed as the blank canvas.

“Keeping a neutral colour palette is always best if you want to decorate with small hints of colour. It not only allows the colours to ‘pop’ more intensely, but stops the room from looking too busy,” the pair said.
“Limiting the room to no more than two feature colours with help you decide on the best complimentary colours to your neutral palette, and will provide a feeling of balance.”
It’s not just about paint colour – but furniture too.
“We spend a third of lives in bed, so it makes sense to invest in a quality piece of furniture that will last the years and give you the quality support you need.
“In regards to how you work in the chosen colour palette, think about your bed as the blank canvas. Keep your sheets colour neutral and add new textures, shapes and colours as the seasons change. The best part is that you can rotate each season.”
Some of their favourite colour combinations include tan and gold and black and green.
Tan & gold
A Mediterranean-style bedroom can be created using natural, wooden tones with highlights of gold.
“This colour combination creates a feeling of warmth. The striking gold features teamed with neutral beige and tan tones can contrast against crisp white linens for a sophisticated bedroom.”
In design projects the pair said they have used golden accessories including a serving tray or a small vase.
“Colour doesn’t need to be bright to make an impact, this combination provides a space with depth and warmth.
“This colour scheme would suit a smaller space as the neutral palette reduces clutter.”
Black & green
A plantation style room with wicker, greens and blacks can help to bring nature indoors.
“The plantation style provides a happy summer feel all year round.
“These highlights of colour will create a cool and calm atmosphere within the room that is perfect for drifting off to peacefully sleep at night.
“Choose natural timber or wicker small chairs or bedside tables to add to your neutral palette. This will add warmth to the room.
“Greenery blurs the lines between inside and outside, adding life to any room.”
