On Wednesday morning, Don Barbaro found 11 sheep that had been mauled. “We found one dead and another 10 had to be put down,” Mr Barbaro said.

Mr Barbaro informed Griffith Rural Crime Police and the Griffith City Council Rangers who quickly found the alleged culprits – a German Shepherd and 18-month-old Boxer.

Mr Barbaro would like to thank them for their quick response and tracking down the alleged dogs that have been taken to the Griffith City Pound and Rehoming Centre.

Griffith Police advise Detective Sergeant Chris Wells found the dogs allegedly responsible. 

Mr Barbaro said, “I know it sounds cruel but I think it’s best for the dogs to be put down because now they’ve got the taste of blood they will definitely attack again if given the opportunity”. 

He said he may seek compensation, as his total loss of sheep has cost him well over $4,500.

The Area News asked Griffith City Council what may happen to the dogs, and they said “Council is not able to comment on this matter as it is still under investigation”.

Manager Executive Services, Shireen Donaldson, had previously advised, “as a dog owner, you are liable if your dog attacks a person or another animal. Active measures need to be taken to ensure yards, fences and gates are secure at all times”.

State legislation reflects the seriousness with which dog attacks are seen, whether on people or other animals, with maximum penalties imposed by a Court of $110,000 and up to two years imprisonment.

“Options are available under legislation for Council to declare a dog menacing or dangerous, depending on the incident. This then places restrictions around the keeping of the dog, including housing requirements, muzzle, desexing, and special signage,” Mrs Donaldson said.

“In some instances and depending on the level of severity of the attack, a dog may also be destroyed.”
