Emergency services rushed to the scene just before 8.30pm after receiving reports a person had been hit by a vehicle in Walla Avenue.
When they arrived, they found a 55-year-old woman suffering critical injuries.
Despite efforts by paramedics, she succumbed to injuries and died at the scene.
The 25-year-old man who had been behind the wheel was taken to Griffith Base Hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing.
A crime scene was established and examined by forensics officers as the investigation into how the tragedy unfolded began.
Griffith police are appealing to the public for anyone who witnessed the incident and not yet spoken to police to contact Crime Stoppers by calling 1800 333 000 or via the online reporting page.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
