While Tasmania Police said Easter was off to a good start with no serious or fatal crashes in the state, officers have detected a number of drink drivers and speeders.
One interstate motorcyclist was caught travelling at 114km/h in a 70km/h zone in the North-West.
Police have so far issued more than 100 speeding infringement notices, charged 10 people with drink driving, and issued seven infringement notices for using mobile phones.
“These people are clearly not heeding the message regarding the dangers of drink and drug driving,” police said in a statement.
“An example of this disregard for the safety of others was evident in Launceston, where a 34-year-old female was detected drink driving on the Esplanade with a reading of 0.168.”
She has been bailed to appear in court in May.
Police have so far conducted 5333 random drug and alcohol tests during the operation, compared to 2699 last year, but the number of drink drivers caught remained relatively stagnant. Police said that was an “encouraging sign”.
The motorcyclist who was travelling 44km/h over the speed limit on Penguin Road in the North-West was disqualified from driving for three months and fined $650.
“Given the fact that all five of our fatalities this year have been motorcyclists, it is an example of the reckless behaviour that can lead to this type of statistic.”
