Firstly, the sides – from under 12s to 18s – took part in a gala weekend on February 4 and 5 which was held to get the new players used to the upcoming matches against the other Western League teams.
“It’s all about getting them on the court,” Griffith Basketball Association’s Lou Testoni said.
“Playing at the gala day means it’s not as scary when they go away to play Western Junior League because it’s a massive step up.”
A handful of teams backed up the gala day by competing at a junior carnival in Wodonga the following week.
The Griffith under 12s girls side rose to the top of its division to take out the grand final.
The girls beat the Deniliquin Giants in the final 32-2 with Timeka Coleman taking out the most valuable player award in the final.
The under 14 girls made it through to the semi-finals where they were pipped by just one point and the under 12 boys missed out on the finals but played their hearts out all weekend.
“A number of the under 12s girls have played together before and they’re a good little side,” Testoni said.
“The under 14s girls and the [under 12s] boys are too.
“They [12s boys] had a great weekend and improved every game along the way.”
In other basketball news, Isaac Testoni went away for the country selection trials on the weekend while fellow gun Giordan Pastro has been ruled out of the game for six months due to a knee injury.
