JACK Martin and Elizabeth Portolesi have won the inaugural Griffith Show wife carrying competition in a six couple strong field, taking home the $300 prize.

Entries were scarce in the hours leading up to the event and reluctant couples on the ground said there was a good reason for it.
Good-natured ribbing flew between many a husband and wife potential dream team on the day with one man remarking he didn’t want to risk his wife’s certain wrath for the foreseeable future in the event that he dropped her.
This was the first time the event ran in the Griffith Show, after great success in Singleton where it has run since 2005.
Originating in Finland and based around a 19th century legend, wife carrying is now a worldwide competitive sport however, according to Griffith residents on Sunday – it is only for the very brave.
