Travel ‘not good enough’
From my understanding, the services offered at the private hospital will only be offered Monday to Friday. When do majority of broken bones in kids happen? On the weekends at sport. So what happens to children on the weekend when broken bones occur? Why can't we get the orthopaedic services at the base and then the private hospital could benefit from the services offered at the base, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week! We need to stop overlooking the base hospital and pour our funds into it so services can be utilised by everyone, all the time.

All well and good to have them treated at the private hospital, but what we need is an orthopaedic specialist. It is not that our hospital is not equipped. It is that we don't have the practitioners.

I have had a lot of dealings with Griffith hospital over the past 12 months or so and cannot fault any of the staff we have had to deal with and I have found the staff go above and beyond their call of duty to make sure not only that the patient is comfortable but myself also. They work to the best of their ability with what they have however because of the lack of surgeons patients are forced to be taken elsewhere which becomes very expensive for family members. Griffith is supposed to be a city but doesn’t have the facilities to accomodate that status which is very, very sad.

It is not just a simple “go to Wagga to get bones set” it is the weekly commute to Wagga for the fracture clinic as well. A few years ago my brother-in-law broke his wrist and we had to take him to Wagga early the next morning only to have a quick doctor’s assessment and told to come back the next day for an operation. Many patients live two or more hours away, with early appointments you have to get up early or stay overnight.
