“I’m there to get things done.”
The candidate for the Mature Age Party said what he lacked in political experience, he made up for in resourcefulness.
“I'm the kind of person to get people together to do it, not to argue about it and carry on like they do in government,” he said. “In Australia, water is our main essence.
“Ron Pike probably knows a bit more than I do, but I've got people that I know, with all the figures, with all the information.”
One thing he emphasised was his desire to introduce a “transaction tax.”
“For every transaction done in government it goes through the banking system and they get their money immediately within five minutes,” he said.
“All the businesses going overseas, they don't pay any tax and the businesses coming in buying things don't pay any tax.
“With this (idea) as soon as the transaction is done, they're paying a tax.”
It won’t be just big businesses paying the transaction tax either.
“With the transaction tax, it's getting everyone, so if we go and buy something in the shop we pay a transaction, even if it's one or two per cent,” Mr O’Brien said.
“It gets rid of the GST, it gets rid of half the public servants, over a period of time.”
Those aren’t the only things he wants to get rid of.
“The other thing is I'm wanting to get rid of is state governments,” Mr O’Brien said.
“If we could get rid of state governments within 12 months our debt would cleared.”
Mr O’Brien said he planned to talk with all local governments – elected or not.
“There's a number of things that can bring Australia back on board again,” he said.
“We can get our essential energy costs down, our electricity, our water, our rates.”
If there’s one thing he’s certainly not lacking, it’s confidence in his own standing in the election.
“If I don't get in this time, I'll definitely get in next time,” he said.
Only time will tell.
