They also passed the motion at their recent council meeting that “the works be undertaken during the 2015/16 financial year, and the funds to be considered during the quarterly review.”
The main benefit that this park will have is the addition of a fence. The gate entry to this area will be so it doesn't allow you direct access to the area, so dogs can’t get out by accident.
Councillor Doug Curran played a crucial part in getting this up and running and said the feedback given by the community had been amazing.
“This has been out in the community twice and it has probably been the best response to a survey that we've held,” he said.
“The three sites selected (as options) were from the feedback that we received from the community the first time, the site that was selected was based on the feedback that we received.”
He asked that council fast-track the proposal so they could look at putting in more dog parks such as these around the Griffith area in the future.
“From a community point of view, we'd like to look at putting one of these in every year in different areas,” he said.
“This would be the trial area, we think that it's a good area and that every suburb and area in town get some attention down the track.”
With dogs of his own, Simon Croce is looking forward to letting them off the leash without the risk of cars.
“There's plenty of places you can go to take your dog for a walk and there are a couple off-leash places but they're not fenced,” he said.
“Your dog could take off and run in front of a car.
“It's good for the dogs because it socialises them.
“My dog might walk past other dogs and it's a bit of a commotion because they don't get socialised, whereas this gets them being with other dogs, plus have a good sniff.
“People might not want to drive 10 kilometres from the other side of Yoogali to get here, so see how this one goes and invest in different site options in the future.”
