Carnival organiser, Griffith City Council’s corporate communications officer Naomi Brugger, said preparations were well under way to make the 2016 carnival a celebration like no other.
“Griffith has been well known for its parades and the carnival sub-committee wanted to bring some of the excitement back for the centenary,” Mrs Brugger said.
“There is no better way to do this than the 2016 Carnival – a street party and parade to be held Saturday, August 6.
“Who can remember lining Banna Avenue watching the parade, or even better, being part of the parade?”
Registration is now open for interested community members, groups and businesses to enter their float or marchers in the street parade.
“We are calling on everyone in the community to get behind this event and register their participation,” Mrs Brugger said.
“Entrants can have a float or simply a group of marchers.
“Depending on interest, we may need to cap numbers so I recommend you register sooner rather than later!”
The sub-committee were also on the lookout for performers and bands to register their interest in being part of the community stage.
“The 2016 Carnival will also incorporate a street party – we plan to have market stalls, a sidewalk sale, performances, food and drink stalls and plenty of entertainment throughout the day,” Mrs Brugger said.
“To make it happen we need local performers, bands and organisations to indicate their interest in being part of the event.
“This can be for the community stage, or providing activities or entertainment at one of the posts along Banna Avenue.”
Griffith mayor John Dal Broi said the centenary year was gearing up to be something which residents will never forget.
“Having lived in the Griffith area my entire life, I remember the excitement of the festivals and parades we used to hold,” Councillor Dal Broi said.
“The 2016 Carnival is going to bring some of the excitement back to Griffith and it will be an incredible event. While it’s early days, if you are interested in registering a float or being part of the celebrations in another day, I would like to encourage you to do so early.”
“We are expecting this will be an overwhelmingly popular event and I am excited to see the entire community coming together to celebrate our birthday.”
