Ray Cheers was awarded the Silver Koala for long-term distinguished service by Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove who also served as chief Scout of Australia. Supporters Michele Cheers, Albert Darlow and Geoff and Baiba Elliot also received special service awards.
The awards were presented to volunteer leaders and supporters who had given valuable service above and beyond what was normally expected.
“While our leaders don’t devote their time and energy to Scouts for the accolades, it’s wonderful that they can be recognised for the positive impact they have on the lives of so many of our youth,” Scout commissioner Heather Dearing said.
For 32 years, Mr Cheers had given dedicated service as a Scout leader in Goolgowi and the wider Riverina region.
His leadership inspired Scouts within his troop to achieve their best and he had consistently encouraged them to set goals and work towards the Australian Scout Medallion.
Due to declining population in the small community of Goolgowi, Mr Cheers’ own troop numbers had dropped in the last few years, but he continued to encourage and support Scouts from other troops across the region, organising and leading activities such as camps, overnight hikes, water activities and rallies.
In 2014, Mr Cheers’ leadership skills were recognised and he was appointed as region leader in the scouting section. Living in the isolated western part of the region, he had travelled many thousands of kilometres to attend region, state and national events to provide support and valuable input at every opportunity.
