The book was created by elders in the Narrandera community and aimed to re-engage students and young Aboriginal people with their culture and heritage.
An Aboriginal elder was contacted, and along with a YOTS worker, took some young people to significant sites in the area, including the Warangesda Aboriginal Mission.
Maria Williams, manager for Youth off the Streets outreach services said the original idea was to get young people more engaged with school.
“The book is made up of stories about heritage from around the Narrandera area,” she said.
“Initially Youth off the Streets wanted to work with parents and the community in an attempt to engage young people about getting into school.
“In consultations with the community we realised before people engaged in school, we should aim to give them a strong sense of their own identity.
“From that strategy we have been able to re-engage with a number of Aboriginal students.”
