Deanna Marriott and Jan Newman will again run the event at the Griffith Ex-Servicemen’s Club to raise money for the Cancer Council.
Griffith’s biggest morning tea will be visited by Cancer Council NSW chief executive officer Jim L'Estrange as well as Cancer Council representatives from Wagga.
Mr L’Estrange will be out and about, mingling with the crowd and telling people what’s happening at Cancer Council NSW.
The CEO’s presence reflects the hard work that Mrs Marriott and Mrs Newman put into the event each year and the pair are incredibly humbled by the gesture.
“It’s a real feather in our cap to think that they would bother to come from Sydney to here,” Mrs Marriott said.
“Ours is fairly unique that we receive so much help. Griffith is so supportive.
“On the Friday morning we'll have about 10 girls making sandwiches from 6am onwards.
“Then we all go down to the club from 10am til 2pm.”
The event has come along way when it started at Mrs Newman’s house and 12 people attended.
Last year the pair received so many cakes and sandwiches that there was leftover treats at the end of the day.
Not to go to waste, they put the leftovers on the bar at the Exies for patrons who could donate a gold coin.
In the end the day raised a little over $6500.
The day will be a big one for Mrs Marriott who will begin baking at 2am.
She will use 25 kilograms of flour and bake, anywhere up to, 1000 scones.
Mrs Marriott said she didn’t mind putting in the hours for such a great cause, that not only raises money, but provides a great day for guests.
“It's a real social day out,” Mrs Marriott said.
“That's why we don't have any entertainment because people want to talk to each other.
“It is something for people to get together. It’s the camaraderie as well, people can come down, talk and catch up.
“They can have as many cups of tea and coffee as they like. We don't limit them to one plate. We put everything on the tables and you serve yourself.” Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea will run from 10am to 2pm at the Griffith Ex-Servicemen’s Club on Friday, April 24. It will just cost $10 for entry to the event.
