Blacks rugby director Lee Kimball said the last details were being finalised.
"We're in the last throws of organising a coach," Kimball said. "Hopefully we will make an announcement in the next week."
Kimball was tight lipped about the new signing, only revealing that he was a local and would be a non-playing coach.
"He is very experienced - he played a lot of rugby in his day," Kimball said.
"It will be a good appointment, and all the players are keen to see who will be their coach, so we're working hard to get that done."
Kimball said he believed the club had lost a few players who were expected to turn out for the Leeton Phantoms.
"We believe a number have gone to Leeton, which is disappointing coming off such a good year last year," he said.
"It is disappointing the way things have transpired."
However, Kimball said the club was excited about a number of new signings.
The club has picked up two centres – Daniel Bozic from Easts in Canberra and Andrew Madden from Wagga Ag.
Prop Matthew Vitucci will return to the club after a year off travelling around the world and Michael Stalley will come back as a second-rower after deciding against retiring.
Kimball also expects brothers Tino and Te'eo Kaue to be key players in the first grade line-up.
Club best and fairest winner Nick Gleeson has also re-signed for the season.
"I think our forward pack will be very similar to last year," Kimball said.
"We have lost some backs, but we're happy about the addition of the two centres."
Kimball said Gleeson and Vitucci had been running training sessions in the lead-up to the start of Southern Inland Rugby Union season.
"The numbers have been slightly down at training, which is pretty normal in Griffith at this time of year with grape harvest and the cricket finals," he said.
"Harvest is nearly finished, so I would expect numbers to increase."
Kimball said he was excited about the club's prospects in the upcoming season.
"I'm sure we will have a very competitive side," he said.
