Police were conducting a covert operation overnight on Wednesday, investigating the spate of break-ins across the city in recent weeks.
Sometime overnight on Wednesday, three cars were stolen in Griffith and discovered after they had been set alight.
About 6.15am, one police officer located the two young men, aged 15 and 16, who were wanted by police.
When the police officer attempted to arrest one of the men, he was struck over the head and assaulted.
The teenagers then ran off.
The injured police officer was taken to Griffith Base Hospital where he was treated for head injuries.
Both of the young men are known to police.
Griffith Police Inspector Anthony Reneker said once they were found, the men would face serious charges.
