Pearce praises Hunt

Brisbane half Ben Hunt fell agonisingly short of conjuring a victory over premiers Sydney Roosters - but he won a new fan in NSW no.7 Mitchell Pearce.

Hunt, 23, tendered a career-best performance with two tries and set up another as the Broncos went down thanks to a Boyd Cordner try with 1:45 remaining at Suncorp Stadium.

"I thought he was pretty much the best player on the field," said Pearce, who laid on the winning try.

"He takes the line on with no fear."

Asked if he was surprised at the performance of his opposite number, Pearce answered: "Yeah.

"I haven't watched to many of the Broncos games. Tonight he was really dangerous.

"Jakey Friend played with him when they were younger and he gave him a massive wrap."

Hunt, who has said he had only thought of himself as a fill-in at half until this year, emerged from a self-imposed media ban to play down what could prove a personal breakout game.

"I felt I played one of the better games I've played for the Broncs," he said. "But there were times I felt I fell out of the game and wasn't really contributing."

Coach Anthony Griffin said it was now a challenge to Hunt to keep up the standard.

"That point where, against the premiers he can have a game like that - he's always had that potential," said Griffin.

"The key for Ben Is that he can become consistent ... so he can peel off 24 games like that."

Five-eighth Josh Hoffman commented: "He's wearing the no.7 and there was one of the greats before him who wore it and he's had a tough journey and has always been that player that's filled in.

"It's great he's got this opportunity and he's proven himself."

Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson claimed he wasn't happy about the last-ditch victory.

"Not really - we won it with talent rather than hard work," he said. "That's not what you want to see.

"It's just way too many points for an NRL team to concede.

"If we get the ball and we get some possession, we know we've got the systems to come up with some points."
