The fire broke out at about 9pm Sunday and Murrumbidgee Shire Council's water cart was dispatched to extinguish the worst of it followed up with assistance from a Darlington Point RFS crew.
Matthew Ross from the RFS said the tip will continue to smoulder for several days which was a concern given this week's extreme fire conditions.
Inspector Ross said crews carting water to the site had noticed a man walking along the road shortly after the incident.
When they went back to collect more water, there was a fire by the roadside.
Tip fires are notoriously difficult to extinguish, Inspector Ross said.
"We will monitor the site closely over the next few days," Inspector Ross said.
"This is a concern for us."
The landfill is located south of the Darlington Point township.

LOCALS at Lake Wyangan and Beelbangera are prepared for the fire season after two successful community fire meetings last week.
Matthew Ross from the RFS said the meetings were well-attended, with dozens of locals turning up to learn more about fire safety.
The groups discussed potential fire trails and where they would best be located.
"We also emphasised the importance of people's bushfire survival plans," Inspector Ross said.
"Everybody needs to have one."
