The One Big Switch campaign was launched last month in a bid to use the power of numbers to negotiate a group discount with the energy retailers.
This week One Big Switch revealed a 16.5 per cent discount was secured for the people of NSW.
With nearly 500 people in the Griffith area signing up to the movement, local residents could save an average of $404 off their yearly power bills.
Yenda resident Carol Rose signed up to the campaign last month and said it was great news that such a significant discount had been negotiated.
“I haven’t heard from the company as yet but it sounds like a great saving,” she said.
“Every little bit helps.”
But Ms Rose said she would have to investigate the offer more before she accepted the deal.
“I’m very interested in it, but the devil is in the detail,” she said.
“I haven’t seen the deals yet and I’d like to see how much it would cost to switch because you might end up worse off if you are charged for switching providers.”
The deal was secured with TRUenergy, who One Big Switch campaign director Christopher Zinn said offered the best price.
“It’s good news because people power produced discounts,” he said.
“Now it goes to the people and you see if it works for you. We hope we’ve given people the tools and the information to decide whether it’s in their interests.”
Mr Zinn said there was no obligation for those who signed up to take the deal.
Nearly 70,000 households in NSW signed up to the campaign and the 16.5 per cent discount was the second highest reduction secured in the country – Victoria was the highest with 18.5 per cent.
The full discount only applies if the households accept a fixed three-year contract and pay their bills on time.
The offers are available until August 17, in which time consumers who have not already signed up to the campaign can do so.
One Big Switch will receive a commission of about $60 for each registrant that takes up the offer.
