Elizabeth Napoli and Joseph Nehme, both 8, along with seven other Griffith dancers, will travel to Wagga at the end of April to strut their stuff in the inaugural Wagga Dancesport Titles.
Instructor and competition organiser David Semken said the young dancers had been working hard before their first contest and were ready to take on whatever was thrown at them.
“They’ve been training together since the start of this year, so not that long but they’re going well,” he said.
“They’ll be doing a cha-cha, waltz, quick step and an evening three-step in the beginners under 10. There are nine dancers in total representing Griffith and Melissa’s Dance Studio –they’re all in different age groups and it’s the first time any of them have been in a competition.”
Elizabeth said she was excited to be part of the competition and couldn’t wait to take to the dance floor in her new hot pink outfit.
“We have been working hard,” she said.
“I’m excited, the cha-cha is my favourite dance and I’m excited to meet all the dancers and watch them.”
Joseph said he was also looking forward to the contest but his favourite dance was the waltz “because of all the turns”.
Mr Semken said the new competition was the first of its kind to be held in an Australian country area.
“There are a lot of big names coming out to Wagga for it,” he said.
“Australian champions will be there, we’ve got American champions flying out for it, all the big boys from Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide are coming up and people who have done Dancing With The Stars will also be there.
“A competition of this level has never been done in Wagga before – there’s probably going to be around 600 people from all over Australian and from overseas.”
