Griffith police reported a total of 778 infringement notices issued during their Operation Safe Arrival, which occurred between 15 December and 31 December.
Some 493 of the notices were issued for speeding, and a further 35 for not wearing a seat belt or helmet.
Inspector Kim Traynor from Griffith Local Area Command said “the message to wear seat belts has been around for a long time, so it’s disappointing to see that many notices”.
On a more positive note, only four drivers were booked for exceeding the drink driving limit during that period – one on Christmas Eve and a further three on New Year’s Eve.
Three of the drink driving offences were in the low range (0.5 to 0.8), while one was in the mid range (0.8 to 1.2).
Riverina death toll
Overall in the Riverina, it’s been a devastating year for the region as road fatalities tipped over double last year’s toll in December.
More than 20 people died on the Riverina’s roads in 2017 compared to nine in 2016.
“The road safety message is like a lock on the door, it keeps the honest people out but road safety messages will only be heard by those who want to hear them,” acting senior supervisor, Southern Region Highway Patrol Andrew Palmowski said.
