If it happens, it would cap off a volatile year of weather extremes, with Griffith recording its coldest ever August morning and hottest September day.
Temperatures are expected to cool on Wednesday, with 30 degrees forecast, before spiking upwards again towards the end of the week.
“It’ll be a very exceptional day for Griffith in December… with the impact of La Niña we see an increase in the frequency and duration of hot spells,” a Bureau of Meteorology spokeswoman said.
Christmas, however, is expected to be not so bad – with temperatures in the mid to high 30s, and the chance of a shower. A Bureau of Meteorology spokesman noted that it’s a bit too early to say for sure.
If 45 degrees is reached on Tuesday, it will be 15 degrees higher than the average December maximum.
Four-year-old Chelsea Quarisa knows how to handle the heat.
“It’s really really hot, I’m going to go for a swim and eat some icy poles. I like the cold better”.
Tarasa Barbaro reported her struggles with the cold weather in August, but was unavailable for comment on our hottest December day.
