It comes after authorities issued a formal flood watch for the Murrumbidgee River on Wednesday.
Falls of up to 50mm on Friday and 80mm on Saturday have the SES closely watching the river, as its upper catchment area is already wet due to rain in the past fortnight.
Acting SES regional controller for Murrumbidgee Jon Gregory said the alert could be best described as a “heads-up”.
“It’s not a bulletin or warning. It’s advice that there could be minor to moderate flooding, depending on rainfall,” Mr Gregory said.
The potential impact of this flooding in the Wagga area, according to the SES flood watch, may include river levels reaching the tops of banks or flowing over into low-lying areas.
Mr Gregory described the current flood watch as a “worst case scenario”.
“But we will be closely watching the Bureau of Meterology’s rainfall predictions,” he said.
