On Sunday, Labor Senator Sam Dastyari will be at the Area Hotel in Griffith for his Politics in the Pub tour (also known as ‘Schooner with a Senator’).
The Iran-born NSW politician has shown he will not be deterred from mixing it with locals over a pint, despite being racially abused by alleged white supremacists when he visited a bar in Footscray earlier this month.
Mr Dastyari is known as an outspoken supporter of cultural and religious diversity, and for his criticism of the political influence and tax avoidance of large corporations. He is a member of the Halal Snack Pack Appreciation Society.
Last year, he was forced to resign from Labor’s front bench over over a scandal involving Chinese donations.
“When you are a Sydney-based politician, it is very easy to get caught in the Sydney-Canberra bubble, which is all consuming, but I am trying to drag myself out of it and spend Saturdays in different towns as much as I can. I am a Senator for all of NSW,” Mr Dastyari said.
“This sort of event allows me to road test what people think about certain ideas, about certain policies. As I said in my book, I think giving a banking license to Australia Post is a good idea – I’d like to know what those who attend will think.
“They can ask whatever they like: citizenship, media diversity, multinational tax avoidance”.
On Sunday, 26 November, Sam will be at the Area Hotel Banna Ave Griffith from 2pm-4pm. Facebook invite: https://www.facebook.com/events/2116409825245912/
