He was sentenced in Griffith Local Court on November 16 for a non-parole period of seven months.
Police say the defendant walked into an unlocked hallway in the early hours of the morning at the Exies Bagtown Motel where he grabbed a fire extinguisher.
The court heard the defendant walked around to the motel’s function centre entrance, hitting the door with the object. The force cracked glass and bent the door frame.
Shortly thereafter, a silent alarm was triggered and someone came to check the door. The witness saw the accused wearing a white shirt and cowboys cap.
He gave chase and a short struggle ensued.
Following the struggle, the defendant fled the scene, leaving behind a pair of blue thongs and his cap.
The witness then tried to pursue the defendant in his car, but was unable to locate him.
Police were then called. DNA evidence was taken and found to match an existing profile in their database.
The incident was captured on CCTV footage.
The man was arrested when police responded to an call out at the his address in what they say was a domestic violence incident. The defendant was then placed under arrest due to the revocation of another parole warrant.
He was searched and taken to the police station where and was found he was also wanted for the motel break and enter.
The court heard the function centre was unusable for two days and three staff members were required for clean up.
