After heading to Barooga on November 6 for the NSW CHS cricket carnival as part of the Riverina side, the talented batsman has found himself selected in the NSW CHS first XII and selection was a bit of a surprise.
“There are some very good players there, and there are also some pretty handy ones that missed out as well,” he said.
He was in form from the first day of the carnival where he was able to score an almost run-a-ball hundred during their game against Sydney East.
After coming in at number three, Bennett became the anchor for his side score 111* as Riverina reached a final total of 232 of their 50 overs before bowling Sydney East out to take an 85 run victory.
In reaching the 100 mark, the young batsmen also became only the fourth Riverina player to reach the milestone at the carnival, but Bennett wasn’t getting too carried away with the achievement.
“I was pretty happy, but I don't really think about it like that I was just happy to do it there,” he said.
In Riverina’s third game against North West, Bennett was also able to make an impact with the bat scoring 56 off 39 deliveries before being dismissed as Riverina were able to come away with a six-wicket win.
Bennett has also been selected for as Riverina following good performances for Murrumbidgee at the Colston/Scammell Shield held over the weekend in Albury.
Bennett who was captain of the side finished with a highest score of 79 against Southern Riverina in their second game and was one of only two Murrumbidgee players selected in the Riverina side for the Bradman Cup in Bathurst on January 15-18.
Bennett feels he has been able to learn a lot in the last week about how he can improve as a cricketer.
“We (Murrumbidgee) had a bit of a younger team, so it was good to learn a bit captaining them,” he said.
“You always learn a lot when you play against better cricketers, and you can learn a few of their ways, and there are probably quite a few things like the professionalism, and you want to be up to there standard.”
