In this week’s edition of ‘At The Bar’ racing expert Michael ‘Speedy’ Stratton and The Area News’ sports journalist Liam Warren sit down to discuss where the mare sits in racing history.
Liam: Well Speedy Winx has won again to make it 21 in a row.
Speedy: 21 and the way she is going and the way she won that she will pass Black Caviers record I'm very confident in that.Everyone knows what sort of horse Black Caviar was but this one she is right up there. I had some my doubts at different times, and somebody said she goes better in Melbourne than she does in Sydney way of racing. Well in that race, the Turnbull Stakes, on the point of the turn all of the others are either under the whip or being ridden hard and she was one the outside and Bowman was standing right up in the irons and had a stranglehold on her and you didn't have to be Einstein to work out what was going to happen and a soon as they straighten he clicked her up, and she said see you later alligator and won by about six lengths.
Liam: How do you reckon she will go in the upcoming races.
Speedy: I think she will do the same in the Cox Plate and to me the way she races, the way she settles I reckon she would run 3200 metres which is, of course, the length of the Melbourne Cup. Having said that she isn't entered in it this year and I would imagine next year they would probably retire her because this time next year she will be a seven year old and it will be her time to buddy up with Longrow or Testa Rossa.
Liam: She has definitely taken in a fair bit of prize money during her time on the track.
Speedy: She is on the verge of 14 million dollars or to be more exact $13,700,000, but it is only a matter of time she will do it in the Cox Plate. The thing is who will be her competition. Will she scare off other owners and trainers but the Cox Plate then again is worth $3 million running second is not too bad you will do alright out of that and even third you would be able to pay a lot of bills of your horse runs third in the race.
Liam: Do you think you have seen a horse better in your time.
Speedy: She is a freak. I have been lucky enough to see some great horse in my years, one, in particular, was Kingston Town. He won three Cox Plates in a row in 1970, 71 and 1972. I think she is as good as Kingston Town maybe even a bit better now and I know that is a big statement but I think she is as good if not better at this point and if she gets to 25 and goes for 26 and gets there you have to say she is better than Black Caviar and you have to class her with Pharlap.
