Recently I injured a hip (my own) and it had been getting me a little down; so I decided to visit my parents, who I seem to ignore until something goes wrong, for some fatherly wisdom and motherly sympathy in the midst of my miseries.

My father hobbled to the front door to greet me saying “Sorry I’m slow Brendan, I’ve got a really sore hip.”
Dad knew nothing of my sore hip, so was this the lesson God wanted me to learn?
God usually speaks to me slower than this. What was my parents’ sage advice? “Go see a doctor”.
I feel a little guilty going to a doctor.
In my younger days I lived near a hospital that was infamous for Golden Staph and my mates and I never even passed this hospital without bagging it out, hobbling around pretending we’d caught golden staph even when filling up at the petrol station across the road. Pfft.

A health problem can be a time to reflect on those around you who care about you unconditionally, with all your faults and emotional outbursts, that become openly strong when going through illness.
It is during these times we can realize that life is what is worth living and who life is worth living for.
During illness we can not only uplift ourselves with this concept but also those around us.
When someone in your life becomes sick with something you have trouble grasping, it can leave us experiencing something that is very new.
As a priest you not only meet sinners, but also some pretty wise and loving saints.

They hate it, but perhaps it’s what has made them who they are.
In times of great illness we are stopped in our tracks, and by force, with a lot of time to think bad things.
But try this: consider who you really want to be in life; or who you once wanted to be.
Consider it is still possible; even though you’ve been unconsciously considering for years it’s now impossible.
This may make you feel a whole lot better a whole lot faster. It may even buy you the time to write out a healthy plan again.
Or write it for the first time.
