Any fears of rain were washed away by clear skies as an estimated 2500 people came to Dalton Park to watch the horses and enjoy the local fashion.
Jockey Club President Bernie Connelly said that they couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day.
“It’s been really great. Perfect weather. The fields are fairly good and there are lots of good horses out on the track,” he said.
“We love putting on a great day for the general public. We all love a day at the races.”
Mr Connelly has been involved in the Griffith Cup since it’s launch.
Vice-President Renae Testoni said that the races offered something different for people to enjoy.
“There have been good numbers through the gates so far. The crowd looks amazing,” she said.
“The event is one once a year. It’s something a little bit different for Griffith. I’ve met heaps of people who have brought friends in from out of town, so that’s been great to see.”
2017 was the Cup’s ninth annual race since the relaunch of the event in 2009.
The coveted cup was taken home by Great Panache. The six-year old mare is trained by the Jerilderie-based Phil Sweeney.
Espirt Warrior and Smart Al came second and third respectively.
Other winners for the day included:
- Ma Bella Christa
- Three Rar
- Yawkey Way
- Delle Donne
- Pay the Ones
Mrs Testoni said that the this year was their best so far in terms of competition on the track.
”We’ve had lots of trainers travel from around NSW and Victoria. That’s really promising for us moving forward,” she said.
The fashions on the field were also in full swing, with fashion blogger Milano Imai flying to Griffith to judge.
Different prizes were awarded across six categories including Couple of the Dat, Lady and Man of the Day and Junior racegoer.
Plenty of prizes were on offer this year, including a $1500 voucher for the coveted Lady of the Day award.
