The dangers of the vehicle use for older riders were laid bare when a 92-year-old man in Ballan suffered head injuries and died after his scooter tipped over as he crossed a gutter earlier this month.
Council reports that NSW road crash data shows that people aged 75 years or over are three times more likely to be killed in a crash than people in their 20s. This risk increases for people aged 85 or over, who are at least four times more likely to die.
Friday’s seminar is based on the Roads and Maritime 65 Plus program, and will include safety tips for people aged 65 or over to make safer choices when driving, walking, using a mobility scooter or a combination of all these.
The session will also explain the licencing requirements for drivers who turn 75 and 85 and will also explain modified licences which allow senior drivers to travel certain distances within the local area to access services such as shopping, community activities and medical appointments.
The seminar will be held at the Griffith Exies Club on Friday 26 May commencing at 11:00am. Light refreshments will be provided and everyone is welcome including those family members who may be helping a family member to plan for their future transport options.
Bookings and further information can be obtained by contacting Mr Balind at the Griffith City Council on 69628100.
