Millis competed in the 16kg snatch at the International Union of Kettlebell Lifting World Championship in Kazakhstan last year and she will again compete in the same event along with the 16kg one-arm long cycle at the 2017 edition at Seoul, South Korea in November.
The Bellistic - CrossFit 2680 owner put up enough reps in both events at the Victorian State Championships to gain selection.
It’s easier said than done and Millissaid it was a matter of wanting selection so much.
“When your’e going for 10 minutes, it feels like your body is giving up but if you can talk yourself into it, you can do it,” Millis said.
“That’s what I did on Saturday. I knew what I wanted and that’s all I wanted. Mental strength becomes a massive thing [when competing].”
Building the mental strength to compete doesn’t come out of the blue.
It’s incorporated in Millis’ training and since linking up with coach Irvin Charleston her mental strength has increased tenfold.
“I thought ‘I love it so much, If I want to do it, I need to get serious about it’ and getting a coach was the best thing,” Millis said.
“He’s helped me, not only with my training and my technique but my mental focus.
“He’s got a martial arts background and he knows how to transfer that into my training.”
Millis also overcame an injury to her left wrist which is now on the mend.
The Australian representative now aims to compete as much as possible in the lead-up to the international event.
“I’m trying to get as many competitions in before nationals to work on form and then I’ll go to Korea and give it my all,” Millis said.
Millis has plenty of events to choose from with Girevoy Sport Australia Association holding events across the country over the next four months.
The national championships at Albury in November are a main focus while there’s an event in June that several members of the Bellisitic crew are eyeing off.
