From humble beginnings in Shepperton, Jeanette Sellwood has used art to take her all around Australia selling artworks and teaching classes similar to the one she held in In The Frame recently.
After only discovering her talent for art at the age of 30 she has since featured in a few exhibitions around Australia and has sold pieces of artwork both in Australia and abroad after finding her skills after taking a class with some older people.
“I was with a group of people in Shepperton who were all 30 years older than me and they kind of inspired me a lot,” she said.
“I could see that I had some kind of a future in art and they thought they had none but they went on to win art awards and be successful and sell their paintings.”
She has now spent the last few years encouraging other to pick up art as a hobby.
“A lot of people have told me that they don't know how to draw anything,” she said.
“Yet they have come to my classes and surprised themselves and they have even surprised me.
“Honestly I have really now come to understand through having people in my classes that if you have a will to do anything and if you put yourself in the position to give it a go you will actually do sometimes a lot better then people who have got a lot more ability.”
The owner of In The Frame, Lyn Larkin said she was happy to be able to provide something the community had been really asking for.
“We have a lot of talent in Griffith and people have been asking for excellent tutelage,” she said.
“She has really been able to help them understand their tones and the basics of how to lay down a good portrait,”
Mrs Sellwood has become well known for painting portraits in many different styles including pastels and watercolours.
Ms Larkin said it was ideal for Griffith to be able to attract someone of her quality.
“I remember years ago she actually featured in the Australian artist magazine,” she said.
“They did a feature on her and it is just amazing that through events that have happened that she is here today.”
