Humble even as he accepted the honour, Mr Casella said for him the day was about being a proud Australian acknowledging Griffith’s rich multicultural history.
“I say with great pride thank you for being nominated,” he said.
“When you look at the faces of the immigrants here and congratulations to the new ones, I have great pride to be Australian and to be part of the local community.
Mr Casella said he and his family had done what they could for the local community and will continue to do so into the future.
A busy man in his own right Mr Casella’s dedication to individuals and causes within the Griffith community has made recognition for his services long overdue.
In his limited personal time the wine magnate visits and supports sick and elderly people in hospital as well as throwing his considerable support behind a wide variety of charities and events.
His impressive list of causes include Post School Options, Griffith and Yenda Centenary celebrations, the citrus sculptures, show society, soccer clubs, salami festival, City 2 Lake fun run and more.
Mr Casella’s active participation and tireless support in fundraising and realising the building of St Vincent’s Private Community Hospital was yet another good deed done on behalf of the community.
Having helped build a business recognised worldwide Mr Casella has not forgotten his roots, continuing to assist students in the area providing scholarships and employment to the city’s youth.
In growing the Casella Family Brands Winery Mr Casella has been instrumental in becoming one of Griffith’s largest employers, going the extra mile to support his staff delivering meals on wheels during work hours.
