We love our country and our way of life, and many believe Thursday is the pinnacle when it comes to our nation’s public holidays.
Sunshine, barbecues, beers and mates – four of the cornerstones making up what’s good about many Australians’ lives.
But it’s not the case for everyone enjoying the lifestyles coming with living in the land down under.
Many people will be celebrating the day in different ways, while others won’t be celebrating at all.
It’s very easy to categorise Australians and their habits on our national holiday.
It also goes beyond January 26 and how we choose to spend our down time.
Some would argue there isn’t enough time devoted to answering some of the less important questions when it comes to Australian culture.
And while that ‘some’ is likely to be very few, what better time to be dissecting the fickle parts of being Australian …
Does Vegemite belong in the fridge or the cupboard?
There’s no reason to keep our favourite condiment in the fridge.
The jar in the cupboard is very much likely to still be eatable well after everything else in the kitchen, but the most important factor advocating room-temperature Vegemite is its ‘spreadability’ on soft bread.
When and where is it appropriate to wear thongs?
During the months from December to March, anytime and anywhere.
Of course there’s those who disagree – bouncers, partners, bosses – but there are certainly avid thong fans who’d wear them far more than what’s culturally accepted.
Which gets volume precedence on Australia Day – Triple J’s Hottest 100, or the cricket?
The music. Channel Nine has done its dash.
What’s better, hot or cold snags?
As long as they’re drowning in tomato sauce, it doesn’t really matter.
Should one-hand-one-bounce be introduced into the laws of international test cricket?
Not by a long shot.
But the popularity of the Big Bash is sure to explode with the implementation of more backyard rules.
