Coro duo Jake Rand (32) and Kyle Bennett (31) were cruising towards the target at Wade High School last Wednesday afternoon after Ben Signor had put on a handy 13 to steer Coro in the right direction.
The pair had put on 50 runs together before Bennett fell to the bowling of Taine Moraschi (1/6) with 35 runs still needed.
Rand instantly found a proficient partner in Jake McKenna.
These two moved the score to 108 before Jacob Testoni (1/8) took the prized wicket of Rand.
The game was on a knife’s edge but McKenna played a lead role in getting the Cougars home.
The allrounder – who also took 1/8 with the ball – remained unbeaten on 20 with Kolby Seers up the other end with two not out.
Earlier in the day, Testoni (34) was in fine form for Exies and got the side back on track after a mixed start.
Coro’s McKenna and Rhys Carnell (1/6) had taken early wickets to reduce Exies to 2/30.
Testoni then combined with Nate Mcgregor (9) and put on a 41-run partnership before both were removed – along with Mason Ashcroft (1) – for two runs.
It was Ben Wood (1/10) and Jacob Witherspoon (2/9) who struck with the ball while Signor was dynamic in the field to produce a run-out.
From there, Sam Irvin (14) and Hayden Forner (12*) batted well to help Exies along to 6/114 after 25 overs before Coro secured the five-wicket win.
The other match between Diggers and Leagues was postponed until this Thursday.
