But standing out from the impressive site of men tottering in heels was one man’s words, as Amar Jit Singh expressed the violence he had witnessed against women.
“The women of my community have to suffer outside violence by the anti-social elements of my community,” he wrote.
“Due to these goons the women of my community feel scared to walk alone, day or night. If we check them, they threaten even the elderly people like me.”
It was a sobering thought for the crowd, that despite the community’s message there were women amongst them still living in fear, but a reality Superintendent of the Griffith Local Area Command Michael Rowan sees often.
“I think that what Mr Singh says is very pertinent to our community – there are some people who may have come to Griffith and they believe there is a cultural right to perpetrate violence against women,” Superintendent Rowan said.
“Well that is absolutely not the case and...we have actually got women who are coming forward, comfortable, to make a complaint about violence against them.
Soroptimist President Pat Cox called on the community to be the change Griffith so desperately needs.
“Don’t just sit back and then when there has been an incident say ‘I thought there was something that was not quite right’,” she said.
“You be there before to make sure we are not one of the worst towns in NSW for domestic violence. It is up to each and everyone of us to make sure our statistics become better...it is up to us to make sure those around us are safe and to take action if we think they are not.”
A sombre comment from president of the Griffith Black and Whites Craig O’Keeffe then brought the message of the day home.
“I am very proud of the way my football club has accepted and picked up the domestic violence message,” he said. “But we shouldn’t have to go out to the community and say that being violent to the people you love and cherish is wrong.”
