The cemetery has fallen into dismay with out-of control weeds, unkempt gardens and no car parking facilities, the Yenda Progress Association (YPA) said. 

YPA president Kay Pellizzer said concerns over the condition of the cemetery was raised with Griffith City Council and they are yet to receive a response.

Ms Pellizzer said she receives numerous calls from concerned residents, who feel the cemetery has been neglected.

“It is unfair the residents of Yenda, who only wish to pay their respects and visit their loved ones, are not entitled to the same conditions as the residents in Griffith,” she said.

“We need to get the cemetery up to standards, every time their is a funeral we have to contact council to get the lawns mowed, we should’t have to do this, there should be regular work and the grounds need to be brought up to the same standards as Griffith.”

A concerned resident, who has both parents a brother and a son buried at the cemetery, said he wants to see the site treated with respect and passion.

“It is appalling, our cemetery should be treated the same as the Griffith’s with mowed lawn, tarred car parking and footpaths,” the resident, who did not wish to named said.

“We pay the same rates and we should be treated the same instead of being treated like second-class citizens.”

Two funerals were severely impacted with residents unable to park in the grounds after flooding during winter, committee member Paul Rossetto said.

“People had to park almost a kilometre away just so they could access the grounds, older residents shouldn’t have walk hundreds of metres to attend funerals or visit the cemetery,” Mr Rossetto said.

“A car park would eliminate car parking issues especially during wet weather.

“The current state of the cemetery is the worst we have ever seen.”
