How long have you worked on this garden?
We have been at the farm for 30 years, it was a little farm house to start with but we have done a lot of renovations to the house and garden. We lost a lot of the original garden when we renovated but we have been redeveloping the garden over the past six years and fortunately we were able to keep all of our established trees.
What style of garden is it?
Patricia would suggest it’s an informal cottage garden, where as I consider it more of a formal cottage garden. It is a very interesting garden because the makeup of the garden is a series of rooms that almost mimics the inside of the house. It is also a place to give things a new home, I like to collect things and re-purpose as many things as I can, especially things that are interesting and have a story.
What has inspired you?
We have travelled a fair bit and we see other gardens and we meet the nicest people, the nicest people seem to be gardeners and we thought it would be great to be part of that.
We wanted a place that was welcoming and a garden that was for everyone.
What do you get out of the garden?
There is a sense of satisfaction, it is like if an artist creates a masterpiece or a builder builds a beautiful house, we have built this beautiful garden that seems to become more beautiful every year as it grows and it matures, it is a great sense of achievement.
Having a garden is like always having a child, you have to look after it and love it but it doesn't grow up and leave you.
What’s your favourite part of the garden and why?
It may sound a bit cliche but there is no part of garden that is more special than anywhere else, it is like saying which is your favourite child, we love it all the same.
What do you enjoy most about the Festival of Gardens and why?
We meet the most amazing and humble people through our garden. What I really love about the festival is that it becomes a meeting place where we can share stories and our love for gardening.
