As we write, new protests are underway with police reporting at least one person has died. It is the latest chapter in the long-simmering tensions over policing in a city with a large black population and high levels of segregation, and comes just a few days after a white police officer in Tulsa, Oklahoma, fatally shot an unarmed black man who could be seen on video raising his hands above his head.

Staying with the US, where the radicalisation of Ahmad Khan Rahami, the NY bomb accused, has further confused Republican candidate Donald Trump about Muslim immigration. Paul McGeough looks at how Trump and his Democrat rival Hillary Clinton are trying to prove each has a better answer to terrorism.

While the US election campaign continues, more lives have been lost in the Mediterranean Sea. A boat carrying 600 migrants from Egypt and African nations has capsized killing at least 43 people, while about 400 are still missing.
