Construction of the new park will start in the financial year and the park will be designed after the city’s youth are consulted.

“We have already consulted with the high schools, in particular with Griffith High and now we can go back to them and say we’re actually going to get this and ask them what it is they want and that will be the next stage and the old park will remain open until we complete the new one,” project lead Nathan Farnell said.

The importance of catering to the city’s younger generation cannot be overstated, according to Senior Constable Alex Davies. 

“The youth will then see that you guys are considering them in the process and – it’s great to see investment in something that gets the kids outside and keeps them fit and healthy,” he said.

“For engaging with youth a facility like this near the PCYC is fantastic – it’s great because they get to know me and other policemen and they know they can come and see me about things if they need to. 

“We can’t wait for this, we are over the moon.”

Member for Murray Adrian Piccoli was instrumental in securing the funding for the new skate park through public resource management funding through the state government. 

Griffith Mayor John Dal Broi thanked him for his efforts saying the facility could now be moved and upgraded to make room for a new outdoor 50m swimming pool. 

“This is terrific news for us,” he said.

“It’s just great our local member has been successful in obtaining the funding for us.

Mr Piccoli said he was excited to see the new skate park and that the government was committed to investing in facilities for the benefit of the community. 

“What I think is really fantastic, is that you’ve got City Park which is almost a tourist attraction, and now you will have something here for the older kids,” he said.

“I think it will be one of the most used facilities in Griffith. We understand the value of these kinds of facilities for children and adults.”
