Jay Summers from Griffith East Public School shovelled the first of the dirt onto the roots along with Governor David Hurley.
The 12-year-old said it would be a moment he would always remember.
“When the tree grows one day I will be able to drive past and tell people I helped plant it,” he said. “I felt really important and very proud.”
Leaders from the Griffith school community all pitched in to lend a hand and speak with the Governor. “I had mixed emotions about meeting him,” 12-year-old Joe Sergi from St Patricks said. “He was very nice and polite and friendly.”
11-year-old Lexi Salvestro, also from St Patricks, said she would one day tell her children she had a hand in planting the tree.
Joe was not alone in his admiration -12-year-old Olivia Bennett said she had enjoyed the opportunity to speak with him.
“He was very intelligent and kind,” she said.
