The 20-year-old said he supported the party’s view on same-sex marriage.

“The way I was raised is with the belief that a mother needs to be there for her child to teach, in the case of a male child, a mother needs to be there so the child will learn respect for women and the father needs to be there for the boy to learn how to be a man," he said.

Mr Smith has supported the party for about two years.

He said it was extremely important for young people to vote.

“It’s extremely important, especially for the younger generation, to vote,” he said.

“When they do vote I just hope they vote carefully, people need to think about who they are voting for.”
