Students were crammed into the quadrangle and balconies above to watch as some novice hairdressers lopped away at the hair of students Imogen Cooper and Darcy O’Donnell.
For 17-year-old Imogen the cause was particularly dear to her heart.
“I’m doing this for my Pop,” the Year 11 student said as friends took scissors to hair that nearly reached her lower back.
“He has leukaemia and he is not doing too well. I want to raise awareness and money to help support Australians all over the country who are dealing with cancer.”
17-year-old Darcy said it had been an easy decision to join Imogen in sacrificing his locks.
“I just felt like I should do at least something,” he said.
"People with cancer deserve better than what they get. I really want to support them, and this is just my way of doing what I can.
Both Imogen and Darcy admitted their timing may not have been the best with their freshly shorn heads immediately feeling the cold however, they said the sacrifice was nothing compared to what others were going through.
“It’s freezing,” Darcy said as he stood up to show the crowd of students his fresh cut to vigorous applause.
“It’s okay though, I’ve already bought two beanies.”
The duo have already raised nearly $2000 for cancer research to be donated to the leukaemia foundation as part of it’s annual ‘World’s Greatest Shave’ fundraiser.
Considering that 35 people every day are told they have blood cancer and needing the foundation’s support and $52 being enough to support someone during a hospital visit from the foundation’s blood cancer support team Darcy said he was happy with what the school and city community had helped them raise.
“I am pretty satisfied with how it has all gone,” Darcy said. “It has been a few months in the making and it’s all for a good cause.”
