After nearly a month away from football, the task of West Griffith away seemed an ominous one.
It didn’t show on the scorecard as the ladder-leaders scored a 5-0 victory.
“I told them (YSC) to unleash and they did, right until the 90th minute,” YSC captain-coach Luke Santolin said.
“We're just missing match fitness, but that will come.”
The game started out a very even contest however as both sides exchanged early shots.
Darren Bailey was once again out in full force for YSC as he used his pace to create chances down the wing.
A cross found the head of YSC’s Luke Santolin 10 yards out, but with a lack of talk from his teammates, he fired first time and struck it wide.
It took nearly 30 minutes, but Joe Preece’s strike to open the scoring was worth the wait.
He got a clean connection on a bouncing ball outside the box and nailed it in off the post to give YSC the lead.
Sean Bremner looked to have doubled the advantage but his shot was an inch too high and rebounded off the crossbar. Not a minute later, Bremner had another chance. This time he made no mistake as YSC took a 2-0 into the halftime break.
Wests looked a defeated team as they came out in the second term. A lovely through ball to YSC’s Grant Davidson froze players and fans alike. With just the keeper to beat, he drilled it home and put his side up by three.
Bremner and Preece both added one more to their tallies as YSC ran out comfortable winners.
Santolin was proud of the effort shown by his side.
“I think you could tell in the last 15 that we were running on fumes,” he said. “But credit to them, they played the whole 90 minutes which is what we want.
“To score five you have to create multiple chances so I'm happy with the goals we scored, but we also created enough chances that it could have been more.”
