Those were the words of Merrilyn Scott, the mother of the late Stephanie Scott, as she spoke at the official opening of a structure that will stand the test of time in her daughter’s honour. 

Leeton High School hosted the Scott family, as well as staff, students and members of the community at the opening of the amphitheater on Tuesday afternoon. 

Mrs Scott addressed those gathered and described the day as one of “many emotions”. 

“We pay tribute to Stephanie and all she brought to the school,” she said. 

“We acknowledge her invaluable contribution as a teacher, colleague and friend. 

“She was dedicated, professional, organised, kind and fair.

“She was a role model, a confidante, a comedian and a fashionista. 

“She had the ability to laugh at herself and she was able to find and achieve a life/work balance.”

Mrs Scott was joined by her husband Robert while reading the tribute to her daughter. 

The new structure is an impressive one and will allow students and staff to create and learn, while remembering Miss Scott at the same time. 

Yellow pillars, Miss Scott’s favourite colour, hold the amphitheater “together” at four points, with a stage and raised seating ensuring a good show will always be seen. 

The idea behind the amphitheater was to create a tangible reminder and tribute to Miss Scott, who was an English and drama teacher at the school. 

The back of the stage is adorned with the words “fly high Steph”. 

Mrs Scott said it was hard to believe she would never see her daughter again. 

“Stephanie has been remembered in so many ways, but this amphitheater is for you, the students and people of Leeton,” she said. 

“Stephanie would be very proud of the way the school and Leeton community have worked together to bring this project to fruition. 

“Use this amphitheatre to remember Stephanie. To reflect, to laugh, to recall quotes and her wise advice, and to feel her love.”
